2. The Grand Canal

京杭大运河位于中国东部，是世界上里程最长、工程

最大、最古老的运河之一，是中国古代劳动人民创造的一
项伟大工程。在漫长的 2500 多年的岁月里，经历了三次

较大的兴修过程。京杭大运河南起余杭（今杭州），北到
涿郡（今北京），贯通海河、黄河等五大水系，全长 1794

千米，是中国仅次于长江的第二条“黄金水道”。它对中
国南北地区之间的经济、文化交流，尤其对沿线地区的经

济发展有巨大的推动作用。

Located in the eastern part of China, the Beijing-Hangzhou
Grand Canal is one of the longest, largest and oldest canals in
the world. It is a great project created by the working people
in ancient China. Over the past 2,500 years, it has experienced
three major construction processes. The Grand Canal starts from
Yuhang (now Hangzhou) in the south and Zhuojun (now Beijing)
in the north. It runs through five major river systems such as Haihe
River, Yellow River, etc., with a total length of 1,794 kilometers.
It is the second “golden waterway” in China after the Yangtze
River. It plays a great important role in the economic and cultural
exchange between the north and the south in China, especially in
the economic development along its route.
